The systems that steer the story

TTRPG Mode (player guide)

TTRPG Mode lets RoleCall run tabletop mechanics with sheets, dice, and player moments while the story keeps flowing.

TTRPG can make several model calls around one visible reply. A normal Separate Mechanics Agent phase is usually one call, while Before + After, roll consequences, Live pauses, Branch continuations, or Narrator tool rounds add more. See Story Director and TTRPG inference calls for the complete feature-by-feature call and token guide.

When Prompt Inspector is enabled, the first immutable wave of model calls is reviewed only after its complete model-visible requests are ready. Mechanics, Narrator, branch-continuation, and post-turn calls remain separate in Outbound Calls and the turn token receipt. The current resumable worker does not open a second blocking model-call wave in the same job because earlier phase outputs cannot yet be replayed safely after a worker restart.

Who runs the rules?

  • Separate Mechanics Agent (default): a dedicated model inspects and updates sheets around narration and owns authoritative resolution. Story Director also calls mechanics tools directly.
  • Narrator: the narrator writes mechanics prose for the scene. Story Director also calls mechanics tools directly.

How narrator moments play

When the narrator owns mechanics:

  • Live pauses — the narrator writes, presents a moment, waits for your answer, then continues the same logical turn. Requires Streaming Responses.
  • Ready-made branches — the narrator prepares sealed continuations first. You pick one; unselected prose never appears. Works with streaming off.

If Live is saved but streaming is off, generation is blocked until you turn streaming on or switch to Branches. The setting is not silently changed.

Extra mechanics passes

Independently of narrator delivery, a dedicated pass may run:

  • None
  • Before narration (legacy default)
  • After narration
  • Before + after

Review and dice

  • Ask every time / Ask for risky changes / Apply automatically
  • Dice: Confirm rolls or Roll automatically

Transcript

Every proposed, answered, resolved, expired, or recovered event stays on the selected swipe as a timeline of moments and receipts. Your answers look like player receipts, not second user messages.

Activity

TTRPG activity controls open TTRPG activity only. They never open Story Director Wing.

Campaign continuity

  • Encounter Board — see every present actor and resources at a glance. Attach and manage sheets in Scene Cast.
  • World Clock — track campaign time; timed conditions can expire when time advances.
  • Campaign Chronicle — durable facts, places, factions, and quests with public/GM visibility.
  • Checkpoints — snapshots you can compare or propose restore from.
  • Offstage Turns — optional off-screen faction movement when the clock advances (never Story Director).
  • Reconcile Campaign State — repair long histories from your decrypted chat in chunks; RoleCall stores findings, not the transcript.
  • Rules Forge / Rules Kits — author reusable declarative mechanics without code.
  • Rules Counsel — ask read-only questions; changes still go through review.

Macros

Use {{mechanics::…}} for read-only sheet, policy, and public campaign facts in prompts. See MACRO_REFERENCE.md. Authoritative rolls still go through mechanics_propose_roll, not {{check}}.
